After the doctors finish the diagnosis and tests, they will recommend one or several treatment options to treat cancer if it exists. Several doctors may treat you depending on your cancer’s severity.

Some of the doctors you may interact with during treatment are:

  • Urologist: A surgeon who specializes in treating diseases of the urinary system and male reproductive system.
  • Radiation oncologist: A doctor who treats cancer with radiation therapy.
  • Medical oncologist: A doctor who treats cancer with medicines such as chemotherapy.

Various treatments may help get rid of your testicular cancer. A doctor who specializes in cancer treatment can help patients select the options that are best for the patient’s unique circumstances.

Types Of Testicular Cancer Treatment

Testicular cancer, along with prostate cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer men experience. It can cause them so much pain both physically, and psychologically. Luckily, decades of research and studies have found various ways to combat these diseases. (1)

We listed below some of the most common treatments used to treat testicular cancer:

Cancer Surgery

It is the primary and most common type of cancer treatment option. Surgery is done to remove the part that is affected by cancer. It should go along with chemotherapy with a taxane and a platinum compound like paclitaxel plus carboplatin. Furthermore, surgical oncologists are the ones that administer it.

The main aim of the surgery is to completely remove the part of the testicle that has cancer or the whole testicle. The types of surgical procedures may vary depending on the stage and location of the tumor tissue. Lastly, surgery can treat both benign and malignant cancer tissues.

Chemotherapy Treatment

Secondly, this treatment is one of the most important cancer treatment options. It works through the administration of chemical drugs to destroy the cancer cells. Hence, it stops the ability of the cancer cells to grow and divide rapidly.

However, some chemotherapy drugs cause the cells that contain cancer to be more sensitive to radiation therapy. Nevertheless, the patients must go through it for multiple sessions over a set period.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays or other particles to kill cancer cells. The most common type of radiation therapy is external-beam radiation therapy.  Radiation therapy is usually given out over a set period and consists of a specific number of treatments.

However, it cannot be used to treat widespread cancer. This is because one drawback of radiation therapy is that it also causes some healthy cells to become damaged. For early-stage testicular cancers, radiation therapy may be the only necessary treatment.

Targeted Therapy

In targeted therapy, the treatment administered targets cancer’s specific proteins, genes or the tissue environment that is the major contributor to the growth of cancer. Meanwhile, immunotherapy is a therapy that helps boost the body’s natural defense mechanism to fight against cancer.

Two or more different types of cancer treatments are usually administered to patients for the best result in the end. Furthermore, the choice of therapy depends entirely on the kind of cancer and the stage of the disease. However, staging may seem difficult in patients who did not have their first treatment as surgery because their TNP is not known. (2)

Choosing the best treatment depends on the general state of health, plans to conceive after undergoing treatment and many other personal interests. Thus, it is best that you choose the best treatment based on your understanding of the side effects and risks associated with it.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials, on the other hand, are research studies that help scientists discover new and promising treatments and procedures. It is one of the ways to get state-of-the-art cancer treatment. This may be the only way through which doctors and patients get access to newer treatment options.

Complementary And Alternative Methods

These methods may include vitamins, special diets, herbs or methods like; massage and acupuncture. Doctors are unlikely to mention other treatments other than those above. However, some of them may administer alternative treatments to alleviate the pain and symptoms patients experience. (3)

Some physicians use complementary methods together with (complement) regular medical care. Alternative treatments, however, are treatments that replace medically approved treatments. Only a few studies have been able to prove some of these treatments. Furthermore, some of these methods have in fact caused various adverse side effects.
